CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

Embracing Our Future Together

Saturviit, Inuit Women’s Association of Nunavik, held its third regional women’s conference, in Kangirsuk from March 27 to 31 2017.
The conference was an opportunity for Nunavik women to gather and share views on important issues including family challenges, parenting, addiction, housing and child advocacy.  It provided a forum for women to express the challenges, but also a way to highlight positive aspects in their lives.  The 5-day conference offered open discussions and presentations.
This conference was also an occasion for Saturviit to celebrate its 10th anniversary.  Women reflected on changes during the last ten years and shared their visions and hopes for the future.

From the rising of the sun, to the setting of the sun, respect your partner, do not anger or harm each other.  This is what we were told.  Annie speaks to healthy relationships.  As a foster parent, she also muses about current child custody practices.

It is imperative we act now.  In our homes and communities, we have a choice, a chance to preserve our language.  We must create opportunity for language use.  We have available resources that we should take advantage of.  Loss of language precipitates loss of culture.
