Street hockey in Igloolik
The town site of Igloolik (population: 1,200) was established in the late 1950s. It was part of an initiative by the Canadian government to settle nomadic Inuit, so that the business of administering the affairs of Inuit would be easier. Igloolik is located on a small island between Melville Peninsula and Baffin Island. The town site is near a traditional winter campsite, known as Iglulik. There is archaeological evidence that nomadic Inuit have been living on this island continuously for more than 4000 years. In Inuktitut, Igloolik means 'place of houses'.
