Plans for a new iron ore mine near Sanikiluaq

The mining company Canadian Orebodies has announced an exploration program this summer to find iron ore at Haig Inlet and the Belcher Islands. They have three different sites they want to open. The company is attracted to the area because of its easy shipping access, and the belief that the sites could hold over 230 million tonnes of iron ore (see this Nunatsiaq News link for more: www.nunatsiaqonline.ca/stories/article/65674)haig_inlet_site_could_hold_230_million_tonnes_of_iron_ore

Sanikiluaq and the Belcher Islands are famous for being the nesting grounds for many species of geese and duck. This project is still only in the first stages of development, but it makes one wonder what will happen to this incredibly diverse and fragile ecosystem if these mines were to be opened.
