      • 02:29 ᓂᐲᑦ ᐃᓄᒃᑎᑐᑦ Atanarjuat Song by Paingut Peterloosie, 5:10

ᓂᐲᑦ ᐃᓄᒃᑎᑐᑦ Atanarjuat Song, 5:10, Inuktitut, sung by a Pond Inlet woman named Paingut Peterloosie. READ BELOW the words translated in English by Zacharias Kunuk. Camera, Zacharias Kunuk, Editor, Carol Kunnuk.

I’m going to sing my Ayaya song.

I recorded it once, thinking I would lose the tune. I broke it into segments and found out it’s a tune sung by Atanarjuat. I’m going to sing a segment now.

Aya. I found it beautiful, just beautiful, as we started travelling inland.

Dog teaming on the land, it’s hard to sit on the sled as you move across the land.

Running along now through this wet snow, we don’t think of how tiring it is.

We travelled on land and passed the black mountain (Mary River). What a beautiful site, this beautiful land.

I remembered my childhood. But when I tried to sleep I couldn't.

When our men went hunting, it’s lonely in this beautiful land. Was I afraid to be alone? My cousin and I are alone now.

When my cousin went outside, I was alone. I was afraid.

I then asked my cousin, “Where are you going?”

When she didn’t answer, I was afraid. Are you leaving because I’m afraid?

When I went outside, I saw my cousin standing behind the tent.

When I saw her, I was glad. When I became happy, I started just laughing.

This is a true story; my song happened.

We travelled by dog team in the summer to hunt caribou from Arctic Bay.

In Caribou Storyteller Elders tell stories of people who lived on the land; showing us what the story is today, what it looks like now and who goes there now…with many questions around: are people still hunting caribou?

Is it still a caribou route? Is it still accessable to this day?

      • 12:48 Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change: Jaipitty Palluq on Polar Bears

Japitty Palluq from Igloolik speaks about polar bears.

I grew up at Kapuivik and bears never came to our camp. Over the years, as I grew up, not very often a bear was caught in this area. Bears were very far away and we had to travel great distances to hunt them. Now, it's unthinkable, bears are everywhere. Last summer, I moved permanently back to my camp, after living four years in Igloolik. When I came back, every night bears came, and they ate all our food that left outside the cabins. That's how it is now. Different, very different from the past.

Back then, between 1950 and 60, there were no polar bear in the area I was born. In the winter, when someone would find polar bear tracks, it was very surprising. Being from a hunting family, when think back, bowheads, ravens, seagulls, geese were in few numbers. Today, they're a lot more abundant. What causes it, I don't know.

Due to climate change, the floating ice is melting, and the bears are being forced to move on land. Bears are now visible everywhere on the land. Even the main land. This was not like this before.

I've noticed female bears, which should have cubs, but don't. There's less males around. It's because the government tells us to only hunt males and we're only allowed to catch a few females. We haven't balanced our hunt of males and females. Females that should have cubs don't have any and end up eating other bear's cubs. That's how it is now. As a hunter, I don't talk about this, but I've seen it.

Polar bears when they shouldn't be skinny, some of them are.

We can't cache walrus meat in places where we used to. Starting in July, we would hunt walrus, and we would have many caches for the meat on an island. In the past, no bears would break in. There were no bears around. Today, I only cache walrus meat right outside my cabin, so I can guard it. If I cache it away from my camp, the bears would take it before freeze up. There's so many bears around.

      • 12:52 Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change: Elisapee Ishulutak

Elisapee Ishulutak, Pangnirtung's oldest resident, discusses climate change.

It use to be steaming fog from the shore and the dog teams would be coming. You could hear their breathing. You could hear them coming in the fog. It was cold. That was wonderful.

It only notice the moon. It seems to be higher. Now, during the full moon you look right up, but it used to be a lot lower. You have look way up now a days. That's what I've noticed.

Everything is different now. There's more wind now. We used to go bating in a row boat. No wind. When we used to see ripples on the water from the wind, we would put up the sail, and it wouldn't come and we had to row the boat. It used to be so calm and not very often would we have wind. Not like today, wind after wind after wind.

It's warmer now. Even the heat is different now. It used to be warm, not like today. It was warm. To me, it's different now.

Yes, the environment is evolving. Everything is following the environment. As it happens now, it's different now, our beautiful environment is changing. We, the Inuit, are changing too.

As it happens, there used to be snow on the glaicers, but they're all gone. All the glaciers that used to be by the shore, they're all gone, completely. There used to be glaciers, it seemed like they'd never melt, bu tnow they're all gone. We used to get drinking water from the glaciers by the shore, but now this source is all gone.

We used to dog team to Pang for Christmas in the winter time. When it froze up the ice was perfect. Now, at the same time of the year, there's no ice. The ice doesn't come.

Maybe the sea is getting warmer and its melting the ice from beneath. It seems like it's just melting, our beautiful ice. In the spring time in July, we used to hunt seals on the ice. The ice would be there for a long time. Some of the ice would be open but more would be solid. We used to hunt baby seals in their dens in July...The ices goes away really quickly, when it the old days it would normally be there. The ice is now very fragile.

        Duration: 4m 47s

      • 12:56 Inuit Knowledge & Climate Change: Lukie Airut

Lukie Airut from Igloolik speaks about climate change.

The light is coming up in the winter time, blowing snow and boring. It was colder, not to long ago.

This spring we noticed that the ice melted quickly. It didn't thaw in two stages. It normally melts, flooding the top, and the bottom layer is still solid. We used to dog team across this bumpy, deeply flooded ice, and we would get stuck traveling through the ice ponds. That bottom layer of ice had no holes and was very thick. This year, the ice melted all at once, and it didn't get to the second stage.

To us Inuit, we notice that the ice is thinning because of the sea. Being here, it was always cold, but it's not like that anymore. The ice thinner and, it seems, the warmth is coming from the sea.

They're melting, the snow patches. Way up on the hills, there used to be snow, they're all melted, and you see this different colour of rock. Just bare rock. I noticed this. And, all the ponds drained that never used to drain.

It's noticeable the land is melting too. Due to melting of the permafrost, today all these ponds are draining. The thawed land has gone further down.

At Ikpik, I've noticed, where there used to be a sandy beach that people would walk on - especially children. I went to that place, it's now all covered in moss, totally covered in moss.

I didn't believe what the southerners were saying. But now, I'm starting to agree with them.

In 1994, fulfilling the wish of 94 year-old Noah Piugattuk to taste whale-skin maqtaq once again before he passes away, a group of Igloolik hunters illegally catches a bowhead whale after years of government prohibition. This event which sparks a legal controversy, the hunters are charged, government policy is resisted, then changed..

In August 1996, with permission from the federal government, Inuit hunters from across the arctic gather in Repulse Bay for the first legal bowhead hunt in more than forty years.

Looking back five years later, Arviq! traces the history of the bowhead whale in the Arctic: from its traditional importance to Inuit, the devastation to near extinction by commercial whaling, as well as the media circus surrounding the legal hunt in 1996. Produced, directed and Edited by Paul Apak Angilirq and Zacharias Kunuk, narrated by Apak.

Join us as host Bambi Amos interviews her mother, Siliuyaq (Beverly Amos). Beverly shares her history, stories, some tips for working on hides, and the land around her Imaryuk (Husky Lakes) cabin.

Beverly grew up speaking her dialect of Sallirmiutun (the language of the people of the coast), on Ikaahuk (Banks Island), with her parents David Nasogaluak, Agnes Carpenter, and siblings. Beverly is a decades-long Inuvialuktun translator and speaker, and has worked to preserve and promote the three Inuvialuktun dialects through her work with the Inuvialuit Cultural Resource Centre, and the Inuvialuit Communications Society. She is a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who now lives on the land full-time.

Tea is boiling over the seal lamps, children playing on the caribou skin beds. Grandmother tells the old stories, everybody has a new one. Home is warm and cozy. It is only when the young ones slip out the door to play outside that we hear the winter wind.

      • 02:18 Passion for the Language ep1

Donna Johns remembers losing her language. She was seven and had just returned to her grandmother after her first year of residential school.

“I'll never forget... we heard a boat coming from a long distance, and that meant visitors were coming, so we always put on a tea kettle, warm up the soup, set up table... my Grandmother asked me [in the language] to fill up the kettle and put it on the stove, and I was just stunned for a second. She looked at me with really sad eyes and she asked me in Inuvialuktun, 'Did you already forget your language?' I understood that part.”

Today, Donna is one of several Inuvialuktun teachers at East 3 Elementary School in Inuvik who are fighting for the survival of the Inuvialuit language. Inuvialuktun, with its three dialects - Ummarmiut, Kangiryurmiut, and Siglit - is in peril with a majority of native speakers passing away and English being the main language for education and communication in the ISR. According to studies by ICRC, only 10% of an estimated 4,000 Inuvialuit speak any form of traditional language, and only about 4% use it at home. Elders Emma Dick and Sarah Tingmiak appear throughout the program speaking their language explaining how Inuvialuktun got to this precarious state.

With the discovery of oil and gas on Inuviauit lands decades ago the development of these resources is closer to becoming a reality. ICS producers travelled with NWT's Deputy Commissioner Gerry Kissoun visiting coastal areas that may be affected by increased traffic asking residents how they feel about the coming changes that development will bring. During the trip ICS also had the opportunity to follow Canada's National Energy Board Chair Gaetan Caron as he travelled to many of the Inuvialuit's 'Sacred Places' on the coast. Vowed to protect the land in their responsibilities as the energy watchdog for oil and gas development in the Beaufort Delta we get Gaetan's perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the Inuvialuit. Supporting the program with music and commentary is Herschel Island–Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park Senior Park Ranger Richard Gordon.

As part of National Energy Board's (NEB) Cultural Tour of Inuvialuit sacred sites, the NEB Chair visited Clara at her camp. “I think it's about time they come and see for themselves instead of just hearing about it, people have to see and do before they really know how we live,” says Clara.

It was a short visit but Clara hopes they will understand what it means to Inuvialuit to be able to continue going to whale camp, and to practice their traditions year after year. “Yes, if they see the beautiful land and how happy we are out here, knowing this is how we survive, then yes they'll understand,” she says softly.

With the discovery of oil and gas on Inuviauit lands decades ago, the development of these resources is closer to becoming a reality. ICS producers travelled with Gerry Kissoun (NWT's Deputy Commissioner) visiting coastal areas that may be affected by increased traffic and asking residents how they feel about the coming changes that development will bring.

“You get the peace, the peace inside, it's so beautiful. You just look around and you thank God for making everything. This is home, this is what the elders taught us.” - Clara Day

        Long Synopsis:

Igloolik, Fall-Winter 1946. It's almost a month since the sun disappeared. Back in the stone house everyone wakes up to Christmas Day. For Inuit in 1946, Christmas is a strange mix of ritual, some from the old life and some from the new. But either way, with lots of meat from a good year hunting, and a warm shelter against the blowing cold, this is a joyful time for celebration and stories.

The history of changes experienced by Inuit people in the last sixty years is contained in the stories of Vivi Kunuk. Abandoned by her father, a White RCMP officer, Vivi Kunuk was adopted by the Inuk family of her mother who raised her as a boy. This is but one remarkable chapter in her life.

With her husband Enuki, she raised eight children living most of the year on the land. Surrounded by her grandchildren, she recounts stories about the land she knows intimately and her life's destiny on Baffin Island.

Circa 1840. Two isolated families meet after many years. It is summer; a happy time to celebrate their reunion. Despite the joyful mood, Ningiuq, an old woman of strength and wisdom, cannot stop worrying. Is it the illness of her best friend, Kutuguk, who is preparing to die? Or is it the strange foreign object that Maniq, her favourite grandson, found on the beach? After a successful fishing season, the families decide to dry the winter's catch on a remote island. Ningiuq volunteers to take on this chore. Her faithful grandson Maniq follows her, as does the old Kutuguk. As the cold of fall begins the three wait in vain for the hunters to return. When the first snow falls Ningiuq decides to return to the main camp with Maniq to see what has happened to the others.
