CÉSAR'S BARK CANOE/CÉSAR ET SON CANOT DECORCE

Synopsis: Building a canoe solely from the materials that the forest provides may become a lost art, even among the Indians whose traditional craft it is. In this film, César Newashish, a sixty-seven-year-old Attikamek Indian of the Manowan Reserve north of Montreal, builds a canoe in the old way, using only birch bark, cedar splints, spruce roots and gum.

Sous nos yeux, César Newashish, un Amérindien de la nation Attikamek de la réserve Manouane, au Québec, construit son canot. Tôt le printemps, ou par temps doux l'hiver, il pénètre dans le bois, choisit son bouleau et, en un tour de main, il en enlève l'écorce qu'il coud de racines d'épinette. De bois de cèdre, il fabrique les bouts de l'embarcation, prépare serres et traverses, «membrage» et lattage, pose des plats-bords et soumet le canot au gommage.
