Inuk, Inuit

There are over 33,000 Inuit in Canada, the majority living in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, Northern Quebec, and Labrador. In 1999 a separate, predominantly Inuit territory, Nunavut, was created out of the Northwest Territories. In Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit, "Inuk" means "person" and "Inuit" means "a group of people". Therefore we say: "One Inuk", "Two Inuuk", "Three or more Inuit". Inuit were formerly known as Eskimo.
