The Nanivara project is centered in two Nunavut communities; Gjoa Haven (Ursuqtuq) and Naujaat (Repulse Bay) where Inuit youth will be involved in exploring, discovering and re-examining the history of their communities.

What the youth learn through this project will be communicated using social media, photography and film. The goal of the Nanivara project is to put youth in these two communities in touch with their history and culture. The project addresses issues of identity, confidence and self- esteem that often confront Inuit youth unfamiliar with many aspects of their social history and culture.

This is a project organized by the School of Social Work at the University of British Columbia. It is sponsored by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) in partnership with the Nunavut Arctic College with generous support from First Air. We are also seeking support for computer hardware and software that can make this project more effective.

The project builds on a previous SSHRC funded initiative in Arviat, Nunavut, called the Nanisiniq Arviat History Project. During the Nanisiniq project, Elders and Inuit youth researched and communicated findings related to the history of the community of Arviat and Inuit Qaujimajatugangit (traditional knowledge). You can read more about the previous Nanisiniq project here nanisiniq.tumblr.com.
