Interview with Dana Moraes and Graham Richard

“I’m a cedar bark weaver. And I’ve been weaving since 2007. And I weave on a daily basis, minimum 4 hours a day.”

“It’s a pretty epic adventure to be a part of […] Old photographs don’t do justice. By seeing the clothing in a more natural setting with people wearing it like they would have on a daily basis, gives a better understanding of how our people lived in the past.”

“We had Rafia sent from Madagascar.”

“In colonization you weren’t’ allowed to wear regalia and masks, and masks had cedar around the edges. So having that tradition brought to me is very special. I know there is a lot of people out there who still do weave cedar but probably not for 4 or 5 hours every single day. That’s my peace, that’s what grounded me. That’s what keeps me in tradition.”

“Unfortunately I’m part of the Indian day school in Old Massett and we were hit when we were speaking Haida. So I have that barrier now of being afraid to speak Haida.”

'We went over and over and over that script so many times.'

‘I was born and raised in Skidegate’

‘I actually submitted a 50-pages story that I’ve written a long time ago. And that was too long and they wanted me to write something else but I didn’t get a chance to write anything else.’

“Of course I’m interested in any kind of thing that pushes Haida culture into the new centuries.”

“[Atanarjuat] portraits real authentic story from the Nations it was from. It kind of gives you an idea about of how you can represent your culture on the screen.”
