Peter Freuchen

Peter Freuchen was born in Nykøbing Falster. He was a journalist, writer and explorer. His expeditions took him to Greenland and the Canadian Arctic. He was part of the Fifth Thule Expedition with Knud Rasmussen. From 1913 to 1920, he served as the Danish governor of the colony at Thule (Greenland). Freuchen lived with the Inuit for decades. He married Navarana an Inuit woman who went with him on some of his expeditions. He was known as Peterjuaq (big Peter) in the Igloolik area.
