SYNOPSIS:

Abandoned by her father, a White RCMP officer, Vivi Kunuk was adopted by the Inuk family of her mother who raised her as a boy. This is but one remarkable chapter in her life.

With her husband Enuki, she raised eight children, including award-winning filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk, living most of the year on the land as her nomadic ancestors did prior to the creation of government settlements in the 1950's. Surrounded by her grandchildren, she recounts stories about the land she knows intimately and her life's destiny on Baffin Island.

The history of changes experienced by Inuit people in the last sixty years is contained in the stories of Vivi Kunuk.

Kingulliit: The Next Generation (Part 1)

Unikkaat Sivunittinnit: Messages from the Past

In 1992, Igloolik Isuma Productions produced a documentary film about traditional Inuit ajaja songs.

Produced by Norman Cohn and Zacharias Kunuk when they were just starting their independent film company, Kunuk searched to better understand ajaja songs: where did the songs come from, how where they made and how have they been passed down generation to generation.

Each elder remembers their own family’s ajaja songs and explains how they were created by poets taking their words from their life experiences. The process also allowed Kunuk to collect traditional music  to publish a full album on CD and to use many of these tradition ajaja songs in his films over the next twenty years.

Year: 2012
Language: Inuktitut
Length: 60 minutes

Directors: Zacharias Kunuk

Kingulliit: The Next Generation (Part 2)

Pingajugijat Kinguvaarijat: The Third Generation

Part 2 of the Kingulliit documentary, by Zacharias Kunuk and Paul Aarulaaq Quassa.

In the 1980’s and 90’s, as aging elders and Third Generation children become modern adults, southern radio and television introduced in 1982 increase the impact of foreign language and culture, and quickly alter the community dynamics of the settlement. Traditional respect for leadership by elders is undermined as Third Generation adults are prematurely empowered by new skills: the ability to speak, read and write English; to negotiate with white bosses and bureaucracies; to get jobs using new technology like trucks, heavy equipment, cash registers, typewriters, fax machines and computers.

This project of inuuja is a great teaching tool for a workshop that involves our culture and to show the last three generations of the life we have lived and how it has changed, when there was little wood and metal available in inuit settlements, when most of the inuit still lived in sod houses and when only a few house where made.

This project of inujja is a great way to teach our youth and children.

All the inujja are made in different clothing that where tough by our mothers, to teach us how to measure and make the clothing, that has been passed on by our antcoistors and we use them for our clothing, this was the way they would teach the girls to know knowledge and survive in their environment, learning how to sew and make clothing and what were their responsibilities.

Inujjaa (inuit traditional dolls) that is made with small pieces of wood, bones and traditional clothing are the original inujjaa we would use, also the fur, bones and rock were the only one available for their toys.  The one who is making the original inujjaa is measuring the clothing that her mother had tought her.  This show a great way to learn and teach our culture. That is why I have decided to make the project of Inujjaa.
