Carol Kunuk - Script Supervisor/Production Assistant

What does your job entail?

I'm working with JKR (The Journals of Knud Rasmussen). I‘m a script supervisor and a production assistant.

How do you juggle both roles?

It’s a lot of communication with the director, art director, and casting director. It‘s working with everybody, so every little bit of information that comes out goes through me too.

How long have you worked at Isuma?

Since August, when Zack and Norman started this from scratch. They had a draft script, but in August we started the Inuktitut translations.

How important is the community to this project?

It’s very important because this movie and the work I do is very challenging. The movie is about the history of Igloolik, our ancestors and who they were. It’s a very interesting thing.

What’s the biggest problem you’ve faced?

So far, it is trying to do the research for the Ajaja songs because they use the old dialect that I‘m not familiar with. It‘s very complicated. Trying to have the translations properly done involves a lot of research.

I‘ve done all the religious hymns for the script, and the Ajaja songs for the Aua family. Now, I‘m going to be concentrating on the Qaggiq songs (Celebration of the return of the sun), and the sounds of the spirits crying. All sorts of songs have yet to be finalized. Before they can be finalized, the actresses have to get the songs and practice. Everybody in the script has a song, so it’s very specialized.

Walk me through your typical day.

I enjoy my work a lot. I like to welcome people and help out a lot. The day is always different for me. We have a new topic everyday and we try to get it all done by the end of the day.

Any plans for after this project?

I plan to have a good three or four months break, with no productions.
