Some short thoughts on recent push by animal activists to make polar bears "uplisted". These are not the ONLY thoughts I have on this subject and are not at all comprehensive -- but mostly I was just thinking about how divorcing animal rights activism from human rights activism is actually a specious concept.

I think another important aspect of this (which is related to the idea of thinking system-wide rather than just about polar bears) is the problem with positioning indigenous people as the threat to polar bears, when realistically what is going to have the largest impact on polar bear populations is climate change. And indiginous peoples have a very small impact on climate change. - sky
yes, that's an excellent point. it's the sort of blinders-based thinking that governments seem to be operating on these days. short term immediate planning rather than long-term effectiveness. in this case, it's focusing on the small picture and not the big one: inuits harming polar bears rather than a global situation harming polar bears.
Oh, the above was posted by Colleen (of Team Keenikoff!) so was this. and this.
Good thought for today. I agree. :) Also, if polar bears weren't cute and WHITE and a part of popular and corporate culture (Coca-Cola!) people would probably not being be trying as hard to defend their rights. I wonder if eels get the same treatment.
