The great shaman, Avva, and his family are living on the land some distance from Iglulik, his home community that lately has taken up the teachings of Christian missionaries.
Explorer/adventurer Knud Rasmussen pays Avva a visit, accompanied by two fellow Danes: trader Peter Freuchen and anthropologist Therkel Mathiassen.
Rasmussen hears and records Avva’s life story and that of his wife Orulu.
Their son, Natar, impulsively agrees to guide Freuchen and Mathiassen north to Iglulik.
After a celebration, Rasmussen leaves to head west while Avva, facing strong headwinds, sets out with his family and guests en route for home.
His beautiful daughter, Apak, has troubling dreams about the road ahead.

Anyone can help me for having a translation in italian?
-i am native..my father chased away by shotgun when mother was pregnant by him..drunk right now as i i type.i think of a billboard near our communiyt that offers help to overcome generational pain that was inherited from our fathers..i never understood it.but now i know what it means.i will never know my father or have the chance becase he was run off with fear of death..every native person has a similar story we hide or never look at.i pray we can heal our spirits our hearts and find peace
I found this movie very interesting in the way it seemed to depict the life the inuit.I think if they hadn't journeyed with the white men to their old colony, their lives would have continued in the way they always lived.
What remarkable effort; the wisdom, and clarity, is an example for the native people and the all people needed of peace and understanding. In my country Chile, the native people live in a hardlest conditions, lost their culture evary day because don´t have support and love for the autorities. Thanks.

I feel ashamed as European - it is so sad what happened to them
I am madly in love with this trilogy! I can't stop watching these films. Hoping someone fluent in both Inuktitut and English could help with some of the un-subtitled scenes in this film. Especially where there are unsubbed scenes of adults talking, laughing, etc. I know a great deal is lost. In spite of this, I am extremely grateful for all of the english subs, I would not be able to enjoy these films without the hard work of the translators. It's good to see there are so many other admirers of these films from around the world!
I live in the place in Denmark where Knud Rasmussen built his big, beautiful house - now a museum - with the money he made from trading with the Thule people.

His profit from their hunting also mainly financed his expeditions. Now a much larger museum will be built here (Hundested). I hope they tell the truth, although it's not always comfortable or convenient. For example, many Greenlanders we see here are socially deprived, often alcoholics. The transition was not managed well by Denmark, I'm afraid.
Thank you for making this marvellous film available - our local library could not buy it due to its small budget, and I couldn't afford it myself. I will try to make sure the new museum gets it. Otherwise it's a disgrace!

Second best indigenous American movie after Atanarjuat.I would even say it was better and more subtle, specially the scenes with the forbidden meat comunion. Evangelism is the second most hazardous calamity after industrialism and the enviromental destruction that comes with it!

Thanks for making this available. It was very sad for me to watch. I am a 62 y/o Inupiak from Unalakleet, Alaska, and a survivor of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and missionaries. Native employees are still not treated as well as other ethnicities in the County of Los Angeles.

The Journals is such a downer-- we see the insidiousness of the whites and the Christians, and the destruction that follows their arrogance and disconnect. But beautifully presented.

I found this movie very interesting in the way it seemed to depict the life the inuit.Even though they lived in harsh conditions they seemed so happy.the ending really made me feel the sadness and pain they felt giving up their traditional ways to embrace,the beliefs of the family ties they had lived away from for so long.I think if they hadn't journeyed with the white men to their old colony, their lives would have continued in the way they always lived.The people, who had already converted to the new religon,the religon of the white men,seemed to just exsist they didn't seem to have the joy of life that knud rasmussen's family had.It was heart wrenching when he sent his spirit helpers away,they were always present in the movie.so you knew they were always a part of his life.He said good-bye to the old traditional ways at that moment. donna bidochka
