Official Languages Act referred to Senate committee

Nunavut's Official Languages Act has been referred to the Senate standing committee on legal and constitutional affairs for review.

On Monday, Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq introduced a motion in the House of Commons to approve the act. It passed unanimously. But debate started once the act was brought to the Senate. Yesterday, Senator Serge Joyal introduced a motion to refer the Languages Act for further review. Liberal Senator Willie Adams originally seconded the motion to accept the act. He's surprised at this turn of events.
"Kind of frustrated because (indecipherable for a moment) should be passed according to me. It's just a motion. Everything, it usually is. Any bills... (indecipherable for a moment) law in the Senate... (indecipherable for a moment). Usually up to about two months that we can study it."
The committee should report to the Senate no later than Thursday. Senator Adams thinks the review is over concerned about French language usage in Nunavut. Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq also expressed her frustration when the Senate began to debate the motion.
